We joined the two words in an effort to define the unbecoming habit of having unnecessary steps in our processes or systems. Be it in the workplace or home.

Tautology is defined as: The saying of the same thing twice over in different words, generally considered to be a fault of style.

So in Processes, this would refer to steps that are just not necessary. The steps that consume resources but really add little to no value to the user.

Hence the portmanteau; Process Tautology.

Some examples are:

1: An organisation accepting CVs (Resumes) as application for a position advertised. The applicants then being asked to complete a template to further summarise their CVs.

2: Having a LinkedIn profile for professional networking and still having to submit a seperate CV to a recruiter who advertised their job offering on LinkedIn.

Basically, Process Tautology refers to such steps. Redundant emphasis or repetition of action from the end user.

By careful audit of the processes in our organisations, end to end, there is much benefit to realise. Efficiency to gain.

Redundancy can be eliminated. Process delays made minimal. Turnaround times optimised. Efficiency heightened. Returns realised sooner.

AYO Chats has a post on their blog using a recruitment process example. See post here.
