According to the Google search, innovate is defined as

Innovate

verb verb: innovate; 3rd person present: innovates; past tense: innovated; past participle: innovated; gerund or present participle: innovating

  1. make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products. "the company's failure to diversify and innovate competitively"

    • introduce (something new, especially a product). "we continue to innovate new products

Many times we adopt something that has already been innovated some time ago. It may be new to the environment you wish to introduce it to, but not really new.

There needs to be a way of deciphering or differentiating between the two. Creating something new and adopting what has been already created into a space where it has never been seen or experienced.

When the Indians made spices, it was innovation. When travellers discovered the spices, bought them and brought back to their country? That is importing innovation. It is new to the traveller's country but not in the world.

So, when one travels the world and brings back findings into their part of the world, it can be classified as innovation as it is new and being introduced to their world. However, being in a time of globalisation and mixed origin living, you might introduce an Apple product in your community as innovation. It can pass off as that if none of the employees have seen the brand before.

In 2020, chances are a fraction of any company's employees have travelled sufficiently to have plenty of international exposure.

So, we need a way to differentiate between introducing something new - never ever existed - and importing something that is new into your environment for adoption.

This goes for importing of technology, culture, practices or traditions. From

The innovation movement from the innovator to the adopter is illustrated below. This explains the reasoning behind the portmanteau creation for Portnovation.
